Take a moment to think about the time and effort involved in structuring a direct-to-consumer or direct business-to-business campaign using one of the two most common offline direct marketing communications techniques:
Print Postal Mailings
: You’ll need to allow time for a designer to create the mailing, typically through several lengthy revisions. Then you’ll need to allow time for the print mailing to be printed, cut and, if necessary, stuffed into envelopes. There will be time while the marketing collateral is being transported via the postal system, and then time while you wait for the consumer to retrieve it from the mail box.
: In addition to having to construct a telesales script, you’ll have to wait the time out while your sales agents dial through cycled call attempts to all of the sales leads or customers on your target list.
With email marketing …
You can turn a marketing communications piece out in typically less than two hours. Using recurring email templates, all you’ll need to do is approve the copy for the email, and any changes to graphics, use easy database list queries to decide whom to send to, and then just hit send.

As mentioned above, with a print mailer or telesales campaign, you’ll need to select marketing campaigns and specials that have a “long tail”, because of the extended period of time between campaign development and implementation.

Were you around in Network Marketing in the early 90’s? I was.
My biggest expenses were long-distance phone service, and postal mailings. Paying $300-$400 in long-distance phone bills was not unheard of for the average network marketer working. That is actually a modest amount. I knew Network Marketers who had long-distance bills of over $1,000 a month!
Direct mailings weren’t much less than that. The struggle was trying to make a success before one went broke!
Today, a Network Marketer can get on a $49 a month unlimited cell-phone service for nation-wide calls, and be able to send 12,000 emails a month, with up to 2000 Subscribers on their list … for FREE.
In the old MLM days, sending out 12,000 post-cards would have cost you a small fortune. (Many actually did this, including yours truly.)
Today, sending out 12,000 postcards (with 300 words and 4 images) will cost you $3,360 for the one-time postal mailing. Ouch!
Also, back then, the only way you could get “leads” was to bug your friends, family, and work associates (some still use this high-pressue, archaic, relationship-destroying method).
When the warm market ran out (ran away), one would either do home-business magazine ads, and post-cards, and of course, grab the telephone book, and start calling distributors from other companies in the area, and trying to flip them (we were desparate back then!).
Worse, some just cold-called out of the Yellow Pages. I tried that, too! lol.
The desparate demand for leads started a craze. You fellow old-timer Networkers, remember (now defunct) ProSTEP? I was with them. MLM leads, today, are still a hot and useful item. I’ll be posting a separate article about that.
I’ve been through the mill, and I truly appreciate what we have today, that’s totally free, to help us market our Network Marketing business. Apparently, some don’t appreciate this enough, take it for granted, and don’t utilize what’s at their finger tips, for free!
I’ll always be puzzled and amazed by this.
